Den Gamle Gaard is a beautiful timber-framed house that dates back to about 1720. Inside
are 22 rooms, arranged to show how a wealthy merchant lived in the early 19th century -
full of antique furniture, porcelain, toys and maritime objects. When we visited it was
open only limited hours - check the website.

SQUARE
The star of Faaborg's main square, is sculptor Kai Nielsen's striking bronze fountain
Ymerbrønd ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) , which caused a minor uproar on its unveiling. It de-
picts a Norse creation myth: the naked frost giant Ymir (from whose body the sky and
earth were made) suckling at the udder of a cow.
Nearby, the recently refurbished Klokketårnet (Bell Tower; MAP GOOGLE MAP ; Tårn-
stræde; adult/child Dkr20/free; daily mid-Jun-Aug) was once part of a medieval church. It's
climbable in summer. From late June to mid-August, you can join the nightwatchman as
he begins his rounds from here every evening at 9pm.
The medieval town gateway Vesterport (West Gate; MAP GOOGLE MAP ) was built in the
15th century to allow entry into Faaborg and is one of only two such gates remaining in
Denmark.
Activities
Don't miss the new improved waterfront area, with a wonderful new timber sea-bathing
pavilion ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) .
The countryside north of Faaborg, Svanninge Bakker, has been dubbed - a little optim-
istically - the 'Funen Alps'. It's made up of rolling hills and woodland crossed with cyc-
ling and walking trails .
