In-Depth Information
collections of vintage cars and aircraft, antique motorcycles and bikes, emergency vehicles
and horse-drawn vehicles, plus a wartime grocery shop.
There's also the cheesy Dracula's Crypt; a fabulous children's playground and a trio of
mazes; and a treetop walk with shaky bridges and push-button birdsong.
The castle grounds usually stay open an hour longer than the castle. Check the website
for 'Open By Night' events (usually Wednesdays in peak summer), when the grounds stay
open until 11pm, with a program of evening concerts and fireworks. There's also pre-
Christmas activity.
Sleeping & Eating
Just outside the gates there's a free camping ground for tents only. Buy shower tokens
from the ticket office.
In the grounds are a couple of kiosks selling hot dogs and ice cream. More-substantial
Italian-leaning fare is on offer at Cafe Jomfru Rigborg (meals Dkr49-165, hamper adult/
child Dkr95/145) . The cafe will also arrange picnic hampers, but these must be ordered with
48 hours' notice.
Getting There & Away
Egeskov Slot is 2km west of Kværndrup on Rte 8, and is well signposted.
If you're in Nyborg or Faaborg, bus 920 (roughly hourly) runs 500m from the castle -
ask the driver where to alight. Otherwise, take a train to Kværndrup station and catch the
920 bus, walk, or take a taxi.
Faaborg
Pop 7200
In its 17th-century heyday, Faaborg claimed one of the country's largest commercial fish-
ing fleets. It might be a lot sleepier these days, but vestiges of those golden years live on in
cobblestone streets like Holkegade, Adelgade and Tårngade. Add to this a couple of good
museums and a reinvigorated waterfront, and you have a winning pitstop.
