Åkirkeby
pop 2050
The inland town of Åkirkeby is a mix of old half-timbered houses and newer homes with
less pull factor.
The tourist office, car park and a couple of simple eateries are at the eastern side of the
church on Jernbanegade. The town square is 150m east of the tourist office.

NaturBornholm MUSEUM
( www.naturbornholm.dk ; Grønningen 30; adult/child Dkr100/60; 10am-5pm Apr-Oct)
NaturBornholm offers a terrific geological and biological narrative of the island spanning
back to its fledgling days as a cooling slab of magma. The museum is packed with inter-
esting facts and lively interactive displays, making it especially popular with families.
Aptly, the centre is perched atop the ancient fault line where Bornholm's sandstone south
is fused with its gneiss and granite north. The building itself was designed by Henning
Larsen, whose claims to fame also include the Copenhagen Opera House.
Aa Kirke CHURCH
(Nybyvej 2; 8am-5pm)
The town takes its name from its main sight, the 12th-century Romanesque stone church
Aa Kirke. Occupying a knoll overlooking the surrounding farmland, this is Bornholm's
largest church. Slip inside for a number of historic treasures, including a 13th-century bap-
tismal font of carved sandstone depicting scenes of Christ and featuring runic script. The
ornate pulpit and altar date from about 1600.
