10am-5pm Jun-Aug, shorter
hrs rest of yr)
Lolland's cultural cred received a much-needed boost with the opening of Fuglsang Kun-
stmuseum, considered one of Denmark's most comprehensive regional art museums.
White, abstract and dramatically framed by Lolland's trademark green fields, its perman-
ent collection spans Danish painting, illustration and sculpture from 1780 to today.
You'll find landscape paintings from prolific 19th-century artists like Jens Juel and PC
Skovgaard, including the latter's iconic View from the Cliffs of Møn(1852). The museum
has a particularly impressive collection of early-20th-century works, among them Jais
Nielsen's striking Futurist painting Afgang!(1918).
Permanent collection aside, Fuglsang Kunstmuseum hosts around three temporary ex-
hibitions annually, and houses a cafe and small, savvy gift shop.
You'll find the museum 4.5km south of the town of Sakskøbing, itself 9km east of
Maribo.

Knuthenborg Safari Park
Drive-through Knuthenborg Safari Park ( www.knuthenborg.dk ; Knuthenborg Allé, Bandholm;
adult/child Dkr199/109; 10am-6pm Jul-early Aug, shorter hrs rest of yr) , 7km north of Maribo
via Rte 289, is northern Europe's biggest safari park and one of Denmark's top attractions.
Its collection of over 1200 wild animals includes free-roaming zebras, antelopes, giraffes,
rhinoceroses, wallabies and other exotic creatures. The park occupies what was once Den-
mark's largest private estate and has an arboretum, aviary, a tiger forest (complete with
free-roaming tigers) and a big adventure playground for your own little monkeys. The sa-
vannah is off limits to anyone not inside a vehicle. Just as well!
