)
Probably one of the few hostels in the world where you can hear the rusty belch of tigers,
this modern 94-bed place is near the zoo, 1km east of the centre. An overhanging roof
makes rooms quite dark, but all have toilets, and facilities include a washing machine and
TV lounge. Take bus 741 (Dkr24) from Nykøbing F train station.
Hotel Falster HOTEL
( 54 85 93 93; www.hotel-falster.dk ; Skovalléen 2; s/d incl breakfast Dkr765/955; )
This is a family-run place with friendly management and 69 comfortable, albeit dated
rooms. Although its location just off a busy main road is not appealing, it's relatively cent-
ral. In mid-2014 the hotel's restaurant and lobby were undergoing reconstruction after a
fire in the restaurant kitchen.
Eating
Café Vandtårnet CAFE
(Hollandsgård 20; sandwiches Dkr45; 10am-4pm Mon-Fri)
Channelling Copenhagen with its boldly coloured furniture, low-slung table lamps, and
contemporary art, this cool, laid-back hang-out sits at the bottom of the town's old water
tower. Tuck into fresh sandwiches, muffins, biscuits and tarts, and wash it all down with
the town's best coffee. Customers get a 50% discount to the art gallery ( vandtaar-
net.multicentersyd.dk ; Hollandsgård 20; adult/child Dkr20/10;
10am-4pm Mon-Fri) upstairs.
La Comida DANISH
( 54 85 09 10; www.lacomida.dk ; Slotsgade 22, Nykøbing F; mains Dkr210; 5-9pm Tue-Sat)
Set in a white-washed, 19th-century wine cellar and run by a young, talented team, La
Comida is by far one of the top dining options in the south islands. The short, seasonal
evening menu is determined by the morning's market produce, put to outstanding use in
sophisticated yet simple dishes like 15-hour slow-cooked veal served with green tomatoes
cooked in apple vinegar, cardamon and vanilla.
The wine list offers some inspired, lesser-known drops; trust the waitstaff's suggestions.
