In-Depth Information
THE GREAT BELT
The Storebælts-forbindelsen (Great Belt Fixed Link; www.storebaelt.dk ; one-way toll motorcycle
Dkr125, small/medium/large car Dkr 125/235/360) is the stuff that engineers lust over. Span-
ning a whopping 18km, its combination of two bridges, island and tunnel allow the E20
motorway to connect Denmark's largest and third-largest islands, Zealand and Funen. It's
an amazing piece of design and worth an admiring gasp. After all, the highest points in
Denmark are the tops of the two 254m pylons on the East Bridge, which joins Zealand to
Sprogø Island before carrying cars onwards over the West Bridge to Funen. The bridges
look particularly stunning at night, glittering and twinkling against a black backdrop.
Three kilometres to the south on the Zealand side is Korsør , a one-time booming ferry
town thanks to its position at the narrowest point between Zealand and Funen. The open-
ing of the Storebælts-forbindelsen changed all that, turning the transport hub into anoth-
er victim of progress. While the town itself has no major drawcards, it is home to the Kor-
sør By og Overfartsmuseum (Korsør Town & Ferry Service Museum;
www.byogoverfartsmuseet.dk ; Søbatteriet 3; 11am-4pm Tue-Sun May-mid-Sep), a museum ded-
icated to the ferries and icebreakers that traversed the Store Bælt over the past two cen-
turies. (After all, everyone deserves a little love, right?)
Korsør's new train station is 3km north of town, by the Storebælt link. It's on the main
line between Zealand and Funen, with trains running roughly every half hour to Copenha-
gen (Dkr138, one hour) and Odense (Dkr146, 30 minutes). Local buses 460, 901 and 908
connect the train station to Korsør's town centre (Dkr26, 10 to 15 minutes).
Getting There & Away

Bus 439 runs from Slagelse to Trelleborg (Dkr26, 12 minutes) from Monday to Friday.

Trains run frequently between Slagelse and Copenhagen (Dkr121, one hour).
