Flaunting an award-winning extension by Copenhagen-based architects Lundgaard &
Tranberg, Sorø Kunstmuseum spans 300 years of Danish art, with works running the
gamut from medieval woodcarvings to modern sculpture and photography. While the col-
lection is best known for its 19th-century 'Golden Age' paintings, it also includes the
largest collection of Russian icons in Denmark, spanning 1500 to 1900. In recent years, the
museum has strengthened its contemporary collection, and its four annual temporary ex-
hibitions showcase both Danish and international artists.

Housed in a handsome half-timbered building dating from 1625, Sorø Museum showcases
an eclectic booty of regional artefacts, including ancient pottery and the partial reconstruc-
tion of a 5,500-year-old Bornholm longhouse. A string of rooms are adorned with period
furnishings, including the fetching living room of an aristocrat. There's also a grocery
shop from 1880, and the personal belongings of the 19th-century poet BS Ingemann, who
taught at Sorø Akademi. Most of the information is in Danish only.
