In-Depth Information
low access to a top-secret subterranean fortress used in the defence of Denmark and
NATO during the Cold War. The tour is in Danish, though a limited number of audio guides
are available in English and German.
You don't need to join a guided tour to explore the above-ground fortress area, which
includes cannons and a Cold War exhibition in the visitors' centre. If you have a smart-
phone, consider downloading the free and informative Stevns Klint app (called Kalk-
landet), which makes for a handy guide to the area.
In Stevns Klint Højerup, Ishuset Højeruplund (2 scoops Dkr30; 10am-8pm daily Apr-Aug)
sells ice cream and refreshments, while the adjoining restaurant Traktørstedet
Højeruplund (lunch Dkr85-152, dinner mains Dkr169-225; noon-8pm Jul & Aug, closed Mon Apr-
Jun & Sep, shorter hrs rest of yr) serves classic, competent Danish grub (though very few
non-meat options).
Stevns Klint lies 29km southeast of Køge. If driving, take route 261 to Store Heddinge
and turn left into Frøslevvej (which becomes Højerupvej). If using public transport, catch
bus 253 (Dkr60, 55 minutes) from Køge train station to Højerup, from where Stevns Klint
is a 550m walk east along Højerup Bygade. In July and August a free shuttle bus runs sev-
eral times daily from a few local train stations (including Store Heddinge and Rødvig) to
points of interest along the coast, including Stevns Klint, Stevns Fyr and Koldkrigsmu-
seum Stevnsfort. See stevnsbussen.dk for times and details.
Sorø
Pop 7845
Thick with old timber-framed houses and framed by peaceful lakes and woodlands, Sorø is
a soulful, off-the-radar spot. It owes its existence to Sorø Akademi, an elite school for no-
blemen's sons established by Christian IV. The academy remains a prestigious school to
this day; its grounds and lakeside park are open to the public, and make for an idyllic late-
afternoon stroll.
During Denmark's 'Golden Age' (1800-50) of national romanticism, Sorø became a
haunt for some of the country's most prominent cultural figures, including Bertel Thor-
valdsen, NFS Grundtvig and Adam Oehlenschlåger.
