Travel Reference
In-Depth Information
This museum on the western side of town runs through Gilleleje's history from the Middle
Ages to the advent of summer tourism. It includes a 19th-century fisherman's house.
Beaches
BEACH
Although they aren't as long and golden as those at Hornbæk or Tisvildeleje, beaches sur-
round the town. The one on the western side, a stretch of sand and stone, meets Blue-Flag
standards and comes with lifeguards in summer.
Walking Trails
WALKING
Of the two coastal trails , the one to the west, which starts near the intersection of Nordre
Strandvej and Vesterbrogade, leads 1.75km to a stone memorial dedicated to the Danish
philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, who used to make visits to this coast.
The trail to the east begins just off Hovedgade and leads 2.5km to the site where two
lighthouses with coal-burning beacons were erected in 1772.
Sleeping
There are no hostels or camping grounds in Gilleleje, but tourist office staff can book
rooms in private homes for around Dkr450/800 for singles/doubles, plus a Dkr35 booking
fee.

HOTEL

)
Kierkegaard was a frequent guest at this luxurious beach hotel. The atmosphere is so richly
nostalgic you half expect the hotel to be sepia-tinted, but instead a soothing egg-white col-
our scheme prevails. All the rooms are bright and sunlit and most have balconies with
views of Sweden. The hotel also offers a sauna, steam room and massage treatments.
You'll find it 1km west of town.
