ON FOOT
We can't stress enough that by far the best way to see Copenhagen is on foot. This has to
be the most eminently walkable capital in Europe, with much of the city centre pedestri-
anised and few main sights or shopping quarters more than a 20-minute walk from the
city centre.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Copenhagen has an extensive public transit system consisting of a metro, rail, bus and
ferry network. All tickets are valid for travel on the metro, buses and S-tog (S-train or loc-
al train) even though they look slightly different, depending on where you buy them. The
free Copenhagen city maps that are distributed by the tourist office show bus routes (with
numbers) and are very useful for finding your way around the city. Online, click onto the
very handy www.rejseplanen.dk for all routes and schedules
Metro ( www.m.dk ) Currently consists of two lines (M1 and M2). A city circle (Cityringen)
line is due for completion in late 2018 or early 2019. Metro trains run around the clock,
with a frequency of two to four minutes in peak times, three to six minutes during the day
and on weekends, and seven to 20 minutes at night. Both lines connects Nørreport with
Kongens Nytorv and Christianshavn. Line M2 (yellow line) runs to the airport.
S-train ( www.dsb.dk ) Known locally as S-tog, Copenhagen's suburban train network runs
seven lines through Central Station (København H). Popular tourist towns covered by the
network include Helsingør and Køge. Services run every four to 20 minutes from approx-
imately 5am to 12.30am. All-night services run hourly on Friday and Saturday (half-
hourly on line F).
Movia ( www.moviatrafik.dk ) The main terminus for Copenhagen's extensive bus system is
Rådhuspladsen, a couple of blocks northeast of Central Station. There are seven primary
