In-Depth Information
If you can't make it to Copenhagen in summer for the main jazz festival, you can take
heart that a smaller festival takes place in winter. It's called, not surprisingly, Vinter Jazz
(it shares a website with the July festival). Also, not surprisingly, the winter version has a
mellower, less-harried vibe.
Shopping
Most of the big retail names and homegrown heavyweights - among them Illums Bo-
lighus, Georg Jensen and Royal Copenhagen - are centered on the main pedestrian shop-
ping strip, Strøget.
Running parallel to the south of Strøget, pedestrianised Strædet (made up of two streets,
Kompagnistræde and Læderstræde) is dotted with interesting jewellery and antique stores.
To the north of Strøget, the area of Pisserenden (centred on Studiestræde, Larsbjørnstræde
and Vestergade) is good for street style, while the so-called Latin Quarter (from Vor Frue
Kirke to Købmagergade) is worth a wander for books and clothing.
Serious fashionistas flock to the area roughly bordered by Strøget, Købmagergade,
Kronprinsensgade and Gothersgade, crammed with high-end Nordic labels, trendsetting
concept stores and cutting-edge jewellery shops.
North of Nyhavn, exclusive Bredgade and Store Kongensgade are lined with private art
galleries and high-end antique stores selling classic, collectable Danish furniture.
For more affordable bric-a-brac, vintage jewellery and kitschy furniture, scour the shops
on Ravnsborggade in Nørrebro. Arty Nørrebro is also home to Elmegade and Jægers-
borggade, two streets pimped with interesting, independent shops.
Further south, the equally fashionable Vesterbro neighbourhood is another good bet for
independent fashion designers and homewares, with most of the offerings on and around
Istedgade and Værndamsvej.
