most interesting streets, lined with independent boutiques and Middle Eastern grocery
shops, as well as cafes and bars filled with Vesterbro creative types.
South of Istedgade awaits Kødbyen (literally 'Meat City'). Dubbed Copenhagen's 'Meat-
packing District', this one-time industrial site has developed into one of the city's trendiest
districts, with an ever-increasing booty of industrial-cool restaurants and bars.
North of Istedgade lies Vesterbrogade, a mainstream shopping street with supermarkets
and midrange fashion stores. Turn right where Vesterbrogade meets Frederiksberg Allé
and you'll hit atmospheric Værndamsvej. Known locally as Copenhagen's 'Little Paris', it's
a super-cute strip with a handful of buzzing cafes, wine bars, restaurants and fashion
boutiques.
Further west, respectable Frederiksberg is where you'll find two of the city's most popu-
lar tourist attractions - the zoo and the Carlsberg Visitors Center. It's also home to
contemporary-art hot spot Ny Carlsberg Vej 68, not to mention Copenhagen's most ro-
mantic park, Frederiksberg Have - home to culinary gem Mielcke & Hurtigkarl.

Adjacent to the architectually whimsical Carlsberg brewery, the Carlsberg Visitors Center
explores the history of Danish beer from 1370 BC (yes, they carbon-dated a bog girl who
was found in a peat bog caressing a jug of well-aged brew). Dioramas give the lowdown
on the brewing process and en route to your final destination you'll pass antique copper
vats and the stables with a dozen Jutland dray horses. The self-guided tour ends at the bar,
where you can knock back two free beers.

Located up on Frederiksberg (Frederik's Hill), Copenhagen Zoo rustles and rumbles with
over 2500 of nature's lovelies, including lions, zebras, hippos and gorillas. The zoo's state-
of-the-art elephant enclosure was designed by English architect Sir Norman Foster, while
the newer Arctic Ring enclosure allows visitors to walk right through the polar-bear pool
for some spectacular close encounters with those cuddly looking beasts.
