The grandest part of Christiansborg is De Kongelige Repræsentationslokaler, an ornate
Renaissance hall where the queen holds royal banquets and entertains heads of state. Of
particular note are the riotously colourful wall tapestries depicting Danish history from
Viking times to today. Created by tapestry designer Bjørn Nørgaard over a decade, the
works were completed in 2000. Keep an eye out for the Adam and Eve-style representa-
tion of the queen and her husband (albeit clothed) in a Danish Garden of Eden.

Tragedy struck CF Hansen's austere, 19th-century neoclassical church on the day of the
1992 Copenhagen Carnival. A stray firework hit the scaffolding that had surrounded the
church during a lengthy restoration and set the roof ablaze, destroying the dome. Miracu-
lously, a remarkable frieze by Bertel Thorvaldsen that rings the ceiling just below the
dome survived. The restorers went back to work and the church reopened in 1997.

Dating from 1767, the wonderfully atmospheric Hofteater (Old Court Theatre) has hosted
everything from Italian opera to local ballet troupes, one of which included fledgling ballet
student Hans Christian Andersen. Taking its current appearance in 1842, the venue is now
the Theatre Museum, and visitors are free to explore the stage, boxes and dressing rooms,
along with displays of set models, drawings, costumes and period posters tracing the his-
tory of Danish theatre.
