In recent years, large oil, gas and condensate discoveries were made in
the South Caspian Basin. The discovery gave the Basin a highly signifi-
cant role in the world fuel and energy balance. Basically, the region became
the geopolitical oil alternative to the leading oil producing countries of the
Persian Gulf region. As a result, extreme views by several scientists popped
up and received currency without sufficient justification. Consequently, it
