Hydrocarbon Generation,
Migration and Accumulation
in the South-Caspian Basin
The knowledge of generation, migration and accumulation of hydrocar-
bons (HC) is mandatory for conducting efficient petroleum exploration
program in the South-Caspian Basin. It is necessary to know the space/
time environments of oil, gas and condensate generation, migration and
accumulation, as well as the nature of their presence in the host natural
reservoirs 1 . These are complex issues that give rise to a diversity of concepts
regarding oil and gas occurrences in the region.
One view is that oil and gas in the entire section is of syngenetic origin.
Hydrocarbon accumulations within the entire section are mostly primary
(autochthonous). They have been formed predominantly by the lateral
hydrocarbon migration from the basin's center to its periphery. Proponents
of this view do not reject the vertical migration but believe that its scope
is minor.
1 “Natural reservoir” (as opposed to just reservoir) includes not only the reservoir
interval proper but also the overlying seal.
