Whyisitnecessarytouseanexternalpowersupplywhencertainitems
requiremorecurrent?Therearefewreasons.TheI/Opinscannotsupply
morethan40milliamps(mA)each.BecauseaDCorservomotorcancon-
sumehundredsofmilliamps,theI/Opinsarenotcapableofdrivingthem
directly.Eveniftheywere,youwouldn'twanttobecauseofthedamagethat
canbecausedbyinductivevoltagespikes.
ItmakessensethatyouneedtouseanexternalsupplywithaDCmotor
becauseyouneedthehighervoltage,butwhydoesaservoneedanexternal
supplyifitisatthesamevoltageastheArduino?TheArduinogeneratesthe
5VusedforthelogiceitherdirectlyfromtheUSBorbyusingabuilt-inlinear
regulatorwiththeDCbarreljackasthesupplyvoltage.WhenyouuseUSB,
amaximumof500mAisavailabletotheArduinoandallitsperipherals,
becausethatiswhattheUSBspeciicationallows.Whenyouuseanexternal
supplyofsuficientcurrent,thebuilt-inregulatorcansupplyupto1ampto
thecomponentsonthe5Vrail.
