thermometer, viewed through a window in front of the clamp, monitors
internal temperature and must show the pre-set operating temperature if the
instrument is to be usable.
rather subjective, and all readings in a single loop should be made by the
same observer so that this subjectivity is eliminated when the base reading
is subtracted. The subjective element is much reduced in instruments fitted
with electronic repeaters.
