Bolted Connections
You've used the Content Center to add bolts to your assembly. Now you'll see how
that process can be enhanced.
In addition to selecting a bolt and its size in a dialog, it's possible to select
bolts and other standard content that you use regularly and add them to a list of
favorites. After an item is added to the list, you can take advantage of a technol-
ogy called AutoDrop that allows you to drag and drop content into the assembly
and size it after it's been brought in.
The Bolted Connection Component Generator is a design accelerator that can
simply add a fastener to an assembly, add a fastener and holes to existing parts,
or even use engineering calculations to help you select the right fastener for the
job. The Bolted Connection Component Generator can calculate the strength of
a single connection, determine how many bolts of a size are required to hold
things together, what size bolts are needed, or what strength they must be.
This probably sounds complicated and diffi cult; but as you'll see in the follow-
ing exercise, it's easy to use.
Adding a Bolted Connection
In this exercise, you'll add a bolt to your favorites and then use it to fasten the
bearing supports in place:
1. In the Assemble tab, start the Place from Content Center tool. As a
reminder, it's under the Place tool in the Component panel. This
again launches the Place from Content Center dialog.
2. In the Category View, navigate to Fasteners
Bolts
Hex Head.
3. Use the Filter pull-down at the top to display only ANSI parts in the
dialog.
4. Navigate to Hex Bolt - Inch in the right window.
5. Right-click the Hex Bolt - Inch icon, and select Add to Favorites, as
shown in Figure 5.22.
Doing so marks this type of fastener as a favorite. You can add
entire groups of fasteners or even include the entire Content Center
in your favorites if you like. Doing this doesn't modify the Content
Center or the components themselves; but, as you're about to see, it
makes them very easy to reach when you need them.
6. At the bottom of the list in the Category View is an icon for History.
Click this icon, and a list of recent components that you've used
appears in the window on the right.
