Padmanabhan et al. introduce the concept of multidimensional clustering and
provide additional details on the automated procedure to recommend cluster-
ing dimensions and granularity levels. 5 , 6 Some experimental results 1 , 2 point
to the fact that an iterative selection of indexes and materialized views or
partitioning can result in suboptimal recommendations and thus advocate
a combined approach to physical database design. Subsequent work in the
area 9 refines this concept by introducing the idea of strong and weak de-
pendencies and the iterative and hybrid approaches to the physical design
problem.
