fully achieved an undertone of doom in his writing voice. Let's forget the dangling mod-
ifier and the pronoun-antecedent mismatch (okay, and the loopy conviction that I'm bet-
ter serving myself and mankind by writing obituaries than riding a bike); as a writer he
has something going. I admire the consistent sound of the bell tolling for me in his prose.
And I have to say, somehow he seems to have a clear sense of the unease that's keeping
me awake tonight: this betting-with-the-universe business is anxiety making. You have
to lose one, eventually, right? Something bad has to happen.
