The Geyser Effect
Wednesday, July 20, Tillamook, Oregon
T The proverbial journey of a thousand miles that begins with a single step . . . That step
is both daunting and exciting. Oh, please! Blah, blah, blah. Get rolling, man!
This morning, I did.
For a departure ceremony, Michael Claussen, the engaging manager of the Commodore
Hotel in Astoria, where I spent my restless night, snapped my picture in front of the
hotel.
“I do this a lot,” he said, though by the evidence his gift is hospitality, not photo-
graphy. It was drizzling, a cool gray morning, not bad for cycling but far from cheery,
and in the photo I look pudgy and unhappy.
