The last leg of my bicycle journey was spurred by thoughts of home, of completing a task, of
being welcomed back. It was a brisk final chapter, both exciting and sad, as endings tend to
be.
So I wrote in 1993, and though I expected some similar feelings this time around,
when I arrived home on Saturday I experienced no such inner conflict.
It's true I've been reflecting on the impending end of my trip for a few weeks now,
and for a while I slowed my pace to accommodate my fear of reentry. But as I crossed
the Delaware River and left Pennsylvania behind, an eagerness for completion surged
over me. I sped through New Jersey (as far as I can tell, the nation's least bike-friendly
state), negotiating a zigzaggy route through suburbs that I shared with zillions of drivers
in a hurry and that took me, among other places, through downtown Paterson and past
