The two of them were a little out of sorts; for the past week their store had been com-
mandeered by an independent film crew, and they were caught between being the proud
proprietors to whom the moviemakers were being entirely solicitous and having nothing
much to do. The movie, they said, was called Old Fashioned , and it is about the tradition-
al courtship between an antiques store owner and the young woman who moves into a
flat above his shop. 4
The next morning, I visited the set and walked through the appealingly cluttered
store. Mr. Fisher, a wry, friendly man, is an American history buff who spoke know-
ledgeably about the region, which was the far western front of the Revolutionary War.
With other like-minded devotees, dressed in full colonial army regalia and carrying a
musket, he once walked seventy-five miles to Bolivar from Beaver, Pennsylvania, reen-
acting a march by General Washington's infantry. Based on his experience, he told me,
I'd have hills to climb until I reached the Pennsylvania border, but then it would be more
downhill. (On balance, I'd say he was right. In any case, his prediction was better than
Mr. Miller's—it rained all morning and into the afternoon.) He told me he liked New
York but wouldn't be able to live there. I said I felt the same about Bolivar. He laughed.
“No stoplights,” he said. “That's kind of the motto of the old-timers in town: 'I moved
here because there's not a damned stoplight to be found.'”
1 . The pitching held up okay, but the Yanks lost anyway in the first round of the playoffs, three games to two,

3 . They did. A few hours after I finished this post, the Tigers beat the Yanks, 3-2. A-Rod struck out to end the
game.
