At the time, the United States and Vietnam had not yet resumed diplomatic relations. Visas for all of the
Americans on our trip were obtained in Mexico by the trip organizers.

About ten days later, during an interview in Ho Chi Minh City with Dang Van Tin, the general managing
director of Vietnamtourism, I told this story and asked for an explanation. Why had I been arrested? Mr. Dang
and his marketing manager, Phan Xuan Anh, who was translating, broke into giggles.
“The news of our open society has not yet gotten out to some of the more remote provinces,” Mr. Dang
finally said.
