I've never been a father, but maybe here's one reason I've been thinking about all this.
A couple of evenings ago, strolling the half dozen or so streets of Chester (where I had
stopped for the night in Judy's M X Motel), I spotted a loaded-down bicycle parked out-
side Spud's Cafe. Inside, I found its owner, Sean McDermott, a younger version of myself
(although fitter and better-looking than I ever was), finishing dinner and putting off set-
ting up his tent in the city park by reading a Salman Rushdie novel. Sean is twenty-two.
He graduated as an English major in the spring from the University of Wisconsin, and he
