dog-sledding, snowshoe trekking and other icy fun.

Alta's ski centre at Rafsbotn, 10km northeast of Alta along the E6, has five downhill runs
and plenty of snowboarding possibilities. Equipment rental is easy to arrange at the centre
and a semi-regular bus connects Rafsbotn to Alta during the season - ask at the tourist of-
fice.
Hiking
For experienced hikers, Alta makes a good launching pad for long-distance hiking trails
that follow historic routes across the Finnmarksvidda plateau to the south. Alta's tourist of-
fice can advise.

The 30 bedrooms - and beds too - are made entirely of ice, as are the chapel, bridal suite
(no complaints of wedding night frigidity so far) and stunning ice bar with its weird-and-
wonderful sculptures lit by fibre-optics. Then again, you might just want to drop by and
visit (adult/child Nkr200/50).
Gargia Fjellstue LODGE

Around 25km south of Alta, direction Kautokeino, this mountain lodge offers a forest get-
away, plenty of activities year-round, and the best foot access to the Sautso-Alta canyon.
