In-Depth Information
Alta's classiest hotel has attractive rooms (some have large photos of the northern lights)
and excellent service. Try for one of the west-facing rooms with views over the cathedral.
The restaurant is also also excellent and there's a bar (closed Sundays).

)
Right from the stuffed brown bear that greets you at the door, the Vica beckons you in. In a
timber-built former farmhouse, it was until recently a family-run concern, and still retains
a more personal feel than many other hotels in this chain. There's a sauna (Nkr100), steam-
ing outdoor hot tub (wonderful in winter when all around is snowcapped) and a good res-
taurant.
Bårstua Gjestehus GUESTHOUSE

This friendly B&B is set back from the E6. Its eight rooms, decorated with striking photo-
graphs, are spruce and well furnished. Each has self-catering facilities.

As its name suggests, this place has two parts: Omega, its contemporary cafe, open 11am
to midnight, serves salads, sandwiches, pastas and cakes. Sink your teeth into its hugely
popular Ole Mattis reindeer steak sandwich. Alfa, a pleasant, casual bar, comes into its
own from 8pm. There's also a terrace, ideal for taking a little summer sunshine, overlook-
ing Alta's bleak central square.
