Getting There & Away
AIR
Destinations with direct Scandinavian Airlines flights to/from Tromsø Airport ( 77 64
84 00; www.avinor.no ) , the main airport for the far north, include Oslo, Narvik/Harstad,
Bodø, Trondheim, Alta, Hammerfest, Kirkenes and Longyearbyen.
Norwegian ( www.norwegian.no ) flies to and from London (Gatwick) and Oslo.
BOAT
Express ( GOOGLE MAP ) boats connect Tromsø and Harstad (2½ hours), via Finnsnes
(1¼ hours), two to four times daily. Tromsø is also a major stop on the Hurtigruten coastal
ferry route.
BUS
The main bus terminal ( GOOGLE MAP ) (sometimes called Prostneset) is on Kaigata, be-
side the Hurtigruten quay ( GOOGLE MAP ) . There are up to three daily express buses to/
from Narvik (Nkr240, 4¼ hours) and one to/from Alta (Nkr560, 6½ hours), where you can
pick up a bus for Honningsvåg, and from there, on to Nordkapp.
CAR & MOTORCYCLE
A two- or four-wheeled vehicle is the best way to negotiate Norway's far-northern reaches.
All major car-hire companies have offices at the airport. Contrasting with steep rates in
summer (when it's essential to reserve in advance), car rental can be very reasonable in
winter.
