Bibliotek
NOTABLE BUILDING
Tromsø's recently constructed library is a wonderful example of contemporary Norwegian
architecture, streaming with light and airiness. There's also free internet access.
Perspektivet
HISTORIC BUILDING
Dating from 1831, Perspektivet houses a permanent photo exhibition illustrating Tromsø's
history and mounts quality temporary displays too. You'll find more early-19th-century
timber buildings around the town centre, including a stretch of 1830s shops and merchants'
homes along Sjøgata.
Polar Museum
MUSEUM
Nkr50/25; 10am-7pm mid-Jun-mid-Aug, 11am-5pm rest of year)
The 1st floor of this harbourside museum illustrates early polar research, especially the
ventures of Nansen and Amundsen. Downstairs there's a well-mounted exhibition about
the hunting and trapping of fuzzy Arctic creatures on Svalbard before coal became king
there. Note the exploding harpoons outside; the whale didn't stand much of a chance.
Botanic Gardens
GARDENS
Within the Arctic, Antarctic and alpine areas of Tromsø's carefully maintained and cared
for Botanisk Hage grows flora from all over the world's colder regions. And yes, it's the
world's northernmost. Take bus 20.
