This friendly sjøhus (sea house) straddling the water is a convivial, excellent-value place
to fetch up and meet fellow travellers. There's also a gem of a six-bed apartment with bal-
cony and full facilities (Nkr1900).

Across a bridge on the islet of Svinøya, site of Svolvær's first settlement, are several cab-
ins, some historic, most contemporary, and all cosy and comfortable. Reception is a verit-
able museum, a restored and restocked krambua (general store), constructed in 1828,
which was Svolvær's first shop. They've properties all over the area and they're some of
the best rorbuer in Lofoten.
Thon Hotel Lofoten HOTEL
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.thonhotels.no ; Torget; r from Nkr973; )
In a pleasing glass edifice overlooking the main square and harbour, Thon's Lofoten out-
post has stylish modern rooms, most with fabulous views. Ask for a room on the upper
floors (avoid the 2nd and 3rd floors) and facing the town for the best views - the binocu-
lars in each room are a nice touch. Service is slick and the location couldn't be more cent-
ral.
Rica Hotel Svolvær HOTEL
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 76 07 22 22; www.rica.no ; Lamholmen; r from Nkr885; )
The Rica here is built on a tiny island, above the water and supported by piles. Room 121
has a hole in the floor so guests can drop a fishing line directly into the water below. Such
novelties aside, the rooms are functional rather than memorable - make sure you get one
with a balcony.
