Norway's aviation museum is huge fun to ramble around if you have even a passing in-
terest in flight and aviation history. Allow at least half a day to roam its 10,000 sq metres.
If you're flying into Bodø for real, you'll see that, from above, the striking modern grey
and smoked-glass main museum building has the shape of an aeroplane propeller. Exhibits
include a complete control tower and hands-on demonstrations.
The affiliated Norwegian Air Force Museum has plenty of examples of historic military
and civilian aircraft from the Tiger Moth to the U2 spy plane (the ill-fated US plane that
was shot down over the Soviet Union in 1960, creating a major diplomatic incident, was
en route from Peshawar in Pakistan to Bodø). Children and kids-at-heart will thrill and
shudder at the small simulator, which, for an extra charge, takes you on some pretty har-
rowing virtual flights, including piloting a fighter jet. Head south along Bankgata, then
750m eastwards along Olav V gate.

Recounting the short history of Bodø, this little gem of a museum has a cheerily entertain-
ing and informative 25-minute film with English subtitles on the town's development. Mu-
seum highlights include a mock-up of a fisherman's rorbu , a section on Sami culture com-
plete with sod hut and ritual drum, regalia relating to the town's fishing heritage, and a
small hoard of 9th-century Viking treasure that was discovered nearby in 1919.
Bodøsjøen Friluftsmuseum MUSEUM

This open-air museum is 3km from town, near Bodøsjøen Camping. Here you'll find 4
hectares of historic homes, farm buildings, boat sheds, WWII German bunkers and the
square-rigged sloop, the Anna Karoline . You can wander the grounds for free but admis-
sion to the buildings is by appointment. Here too is the start of a walking track up the
river Bodøgårdselva, which eventually leads to the wild, scenic Bodømarka woods.
