No, Stavanger can't compete with Bergen on looks, but it's a far from unlovely city, with
original dockside warehouses and pretty 18th-century streets climbing up from a bustling
harbour. And while it retains something of its small-town roots - an enchanting feeling of
light and space, for one - if you want to see the fruits of Norway's oil boom, Stavanger is a
good place to start. Most nights, especially in summer, the city's waterfront comes alive in
the best tradition of port cities, and you can eat well here, if not cheaply.
