Visnes Grubeområde MUSEUM
( www.visitkarmoy.no ; Visnes; adult/child Nkr60/15;
11am-5pm Mon-Fri, noon-5pm Sun Jun-mid-
Aug)
Copper from this mine at Visnes, 4km west of Avaldsnes, was used to build the Statue of
Liberty in New York and the operations here were the largest and most modern in northern
Europe. The museum showcases operations at the copper mine back to 1865, along with
access to the extensive parkland that the mine's progressive French manager and engineer
originally created for workers' recreation.

Norneshuset B&B
( 90 05 90 07; www.norneshuset.no ; Nordnes 7, Skudeneshavn; s/d Nkr990/1190)
This B&B has character-filled rooms right by the harbour and very friendly service; it's
located in a former warehouse that was shipped from Riga, Latvia, in the 1830s.
Getting There & Away
To reach Avaldsnes from central Haugesund, catch bus 8, 9 or 10 (Nkr42) from next to the
post office. Bus 10 continues further south to Skudeneshavn (Nkr65, 1¼ hours). There are
semiregular car ferries from Skudeneshavn to Mekjarvik (for Stavanger) and the Hauge-
sund-Stavanger passenger ferry stops into Kopervik.
STAVANGER & LYSEFJORD
Tucked away in Norway's southwest, the oil-rich city of Stavanger guarantees a good night
out and has some excellent museums. It also serves as the gateway to Lysefjord, the south-
ernmost of Norway's signature fjords and home to one of its most recognisable vantage
points - Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock).
