Matre and Åkra to the right, follow the signs left to Blådal and the winter-only Fjellhaugen
Skisenter; later ignore the signs to the ski centre. From this road junction, the narrow but
well-paved road climbs up through some glorious wooded, rocky hills, studded with lakes
and dams.
HAUGELANDET & RYFYLKE
North and east of Stavanger lies a region of low-lying hills and coastal inlets and islands
that are reminiscent of the northern Scottish isles. Happy Haugesund is the regional capit-

Haugesund

The North Sea port of Haugesund lies beyond the well-trodden west coast routes. That's a
shame, because it's both a great jumping off point to the rich cultural sites and stunning
beaches of Karmøy island, just to the south, as well as being a rollicking, well-to-do town
that knows a good time when it sees it. In fact, there appears to be more bars than people
and the shopping is some of the country's best. Plus if you've a penchant for boats, of all
persuasions, you're in luck.
The region carries huge historical significance for Norwegians. It was in the nearby Ha-
frsfjord that the decisive battle took place in 872 and Norway was first unified. As such,
the area bills itself as 'Norway's Birthplace'.
Ryanair flies direct, so this may be your entry point into Norway. Note that hotels cater
to industry not travellers, with little in the way of boutique or budget options; that said,
you can often score some great last-minute deals at the big chains.
