Just outside the grounds of the Baroniet Rosendal, this rambling farmhouse has attractive
rooms with wrought-iron bedsteads and shared bathrooms. Dinner is available and is
served in the farmhouse's large kitchen; the three-course menu (Nkr490) changes daily and
utilises fruit, vegetables and herbs from the garden.
Martha Meidell NORWEGIAN
(Rosendal Touristhotel; lunch dishes Nkr168-185, mains Nkr255-275; lunch 1-6pm, dinner 7-10pm)
Rosendal Touristhotell's restaurant-cafe is the smartest in town, with a simple but nicely
considered menu of traditional dishes such as baked trout or 48-hour braised beef, made
from local produce. Lunches are lighter, say brisket rolls or hot smoked salmon, and the
kids menu must be the country's most gourmet, with venison meatballs (Nkr95) or fish
quenelles (Nkr85).
On Friday and Saturday nights, the basement wine bar Gjesten opens until 1am.
Snikkeriet RESTAURANT
( www.snikkeriet.no ; mains Nkr150-210; noon-10pm Sun-Thu, noon-1am Fri & Sat Easter-Aug)
Snikkeriet is known for its well-priced home-cooked Norwegian meals, including fjord
trout and local sausages. The first time we walked into this place, we found the owner
playing guitar and singing to an empty bar. We almost walked out, but we're glad we
didn't; she was warming up for the hugely popular Friday night (9pm) live jam session.
This is a local institution, as musicians from all over the region come to play rock, blues
or jazz.
