This beautifully located guesthouse, 10km west of Utne on Fv550, is in a pretty 1898
building right on the water. Its character-filled rooms are decorated with handpainted tradi-
tional furniture and it offers good weekly rates.
Utne Hotel HISTORIC HOTEL
( 53 66 64 00; www.utnehotel.no ; Utne; s/d annex Nkr1290/1690, historic main bldg Nkr1490/
1890; )
The historic wooden Utne Hotel was built in 1722 after the Great Nordic War, giving it
claim to the title of Norway's oldest hotel, and has an interesting lineage of female
hoteliers. Rooms have a simple elegance that harks back to another time, although bath-
rooms are smart and modern.
The public spaces retain the scale of the 18th-century, with cosy low-ceilings, winding
stairs and beautiful woodwork all setting off a wonderful collection of antiques including
local textile work and paintings. Staying on a half-pension basis (Nkr525) is recommen-
ded. The hotel's fabulous decor makes it worth a look even if you're not staying, and it has
the best (and sometimes only) restaurant in town.
