EIRIK GLAMBEK BØE
Eirik Glambek Bøe, one half of Kings of Convenience , the internationally acclaimed indie
folk duo whose 2001 albumQuiet is the New Loudcame to define the Bergen Wave
sound, continues to live and work in his hometown. Here are his suggestions for a perfect
Bergen day.
Breakfast pastries Bergen claims to be the home ofkanelboller(cinnamon buns). I
have no idea if there's any truth to it, but several places serve really good ones: try Det
Lille Kaffekompaniet .
Coffee run We were proud of our lack of Starbucks here, due to the strong, local coffee
scene. Now you'll have to pass by a few to find the local shops: Kaffemisjonen, Blom and
Kaffebrenneri are my favourites.
City lunch No.13's restaurant offers neo-Nordic gourmet lunches for low-budget trav-
ellers. And the sandwiches at Smakverket are very good.
Afternoon tea and nature Bergen has mountains and seaside within walking distance.
If the weather is bad, you can drink your tea indoors at Sky:Skraperen restaurant at the
top of Mt Ulriken, or at Kafe Kippers by the seaside at Nordnes.
West-coast flavours There has been something of a revolution in terms of good, local
food here lately. Lysverket's mackerel ceviche with rhubarb is just one dish I could men-
tion. But so many places are really good: Colonialen , Hanne på Høyden , Cornelius , Res-
taurant 1877 , Bien , Bastant , Dr Wiesener (
416 25 969; Nye Sandviksveien 17a;
1pm-1am
Sun-Mon, to 2am Fri & Sat).
Cocktails Have a quiet drink at Altona or Grand Hotel Terminus , or a more lively one at
Legal , Lysverket or Ujevnt (its aqua sours are an idiosyncratic signature).
Live music So many venues. Find a local with your taste in clothes and ask him or her:
'What's on tonight?'
Club nIght Landmark , Østre and Café Opera are all places where you are likely to find a
DJ and people dancing. One Friday every month, you can come to my own Klubb Kavalér
(for dates, check the Facebook page). It's in a beautiful old ballroom called Fensal; a
20-piece big band is invited to try and recreate what New York must have felt like when
the Glenn Miller Orchestra used to play. Expect partner dance.
