This stone church, with its Romanesque entrance and twin towers, dates from the early
12th century and is Bergen's oldest building. The interior features 15th-century frescoes
and a splendid baroque pulpit donated by Hanseatic merchants in 1676.
Leprosy Museum

Although most of the buildings at St George's Hospital date from the 19th century, in me-
dieval times the site was also a leprosarium. Far more palatable that it sounds, exhibits
here detail Norway's contributions to leprosy research, including the work of Dr Armauer
Hansen, who discovered the leprosy bacillus in Bergen in 1873 and gave his name to the
modern name for leprosy.
