In-Depth Information
No matter what the temperature is like elsewhere in Finse you can be certain it will be
bitterly cold on the ice sheet. Bring lots of warm, waterproof layers and gloves, hat and
sunglasses. If you have children under about 12 years old with you, it's better to organise a
private hike because many children find the long walk, the cold and the general fear of the
ice a bit much.
Sleeping & Eating
There are only two places to stay and nowhere to eat outside of the dining rooms of these
hotels. Many people wild camp near the lake shore.
Finsehytta LODGE
( 56 52 67 32; www.finsehytta.turistforeningen.no ; dm Nkr210-350; mid-Mar-late Sep; )
Most budget travellers stay at the staffed DNT hut, Finsehytta, which has decent dorms,
some of which sleep only two or three people making it a fine choice for couples and fam-
ilies. A set three-course dinner costs Nkr350.
Finse 1222 MOUNTAIN LODGE
( 56 52 71 00; www.finse1222.no ; full board s/d from Nkr1750/2800; )
The exceptionally pleasant Finse 1222, right by the tiny train station, has modern, tidy,
well-insulated rooms, many of which have outrageous views over the lake and glacier.
Parts of the lodge are actually built out of old trains. Finse 1222 is also the starting point
and best source of information for many of the activities in the region.
Set meals, which are so full of flavour and imagination that they have to be ranked
among Norway's finest eating experiences, are taken in a dining room with huge floor-to-
ceiling windows and views over the Arctic landscape.
Getting There & Away
Five daily trains run between Oslo (from Nkr593, 4½ hours) and Bergen (from Nkr368,
2½ hours) via Finse.
