HIKING IN JOTUNHEIMEN
Jotunheimen's hiking possibilities are practically endless and all are spectacular. The best
maps are Statens Kartverk'sJotunheimen AustandJotunheimen Vest(1:50,000; Nkr99
each). The tourist office in Lom can offer advice, route descriptions and guided hikes
through the park, while Top of Norway ( www.ton.no ), which is based at the Elvesæter Hotel
and Leirvassbu Lodge, organises guided hikes, as well as glacier walks, rock-climbing, ice-
climbing and caving from around Nkr500 per person.
KROSSBU
Krossbu Turiststasjon , near the head of Bøverdalen, lies at the outset of a tangle of hiking
routes, including a short day trip to the Smørstabbreen glacier.
GALDHØPIGGEN
With its dramatic cirques, arêtes and glaciers, Galdhøpiggen is a fairly tough, eight-hour
day hike (1470m of ascent) from Spiterstulen, where the toll road begins. Although the
trail is well marked, you'll need a map and compass.
ØVRE ÅRDAL
From Øvre Årdal, head 12km northeast up the Utladalen valley to the farm Vetti, from
where hiking tracks lead to Vettisfossen, Norway's highest free-falling waterfall (275m),
and to the unstaffed hut at Skølsmaradalen ( GOOGLE MAP ). This is an alternative access
route, via upper Utladalen, to longer hikes in Jotunheimen.
HURRUNGANE
The fabulous Hurrungane massif rises darkly above the westernmost end of the park. Al-
though some of these prominent peaks are accessible to experienced mountaineers and,
in some cases, skilled scramblers, most hikers head eastwards from Turtagrø Hotel. From
the hotel, a four-hour hike will take you to Norway's highest Den Norske Turistforening
(DNT) hut, Fannaråki ( GOOGLE MAP ), on the summit of Fannaråken (2068m). While the
hut itself is your typical DNT deal (ie clean and basic), the views are some of the best
from accommodation anywhere in Norway, taking in a representative sample of the Hur-
rungane massif and the glacier country to the west; to reach the hut, ask for directions at
the hotel. An alternative to returning to the hotel is to descend the eastern slope along
the well-marked track to Keisarpasset and thence back to Ekrehytta. To launch into a
