In-Depth Information
Sjoa
The tiny settlement of Sjoa, 10km south of Otta, is little more than a couple of buildings
overlooking a pretty stretch of river. It would have little to detain you were it not for the
fact that it's arguably the white-water-rafting capital of Norway.
Activities
The white-water rafting season runs from the middle of May until early October. Excur-
sions range from sedate Class I runs (ideal for families) up to thrilling Class Vs. A note of
warning: white-water rafting can be dangerous. There were four fatalities on one day alone
in 2010 and another nine in the 20 years proceeding that.
Prices start from Nkr775 for a 3½-hour trip; there are also five-hour trips (from
Nkr1050) through to multi-day trips (from Nkr2900). A shorter, family-friendly rafting
trip is also available (Nkr650). These prices are approximate and depend on the company
you use, but most charge, and offer, roughly the same.
In addition to rafting, most operators also organise riverboarding (from Nkr990), low-
level rock climbing (from Nkr490), canyoning (from Nkr820), caving (from Nkr690) and
hiking.
