In-Depth Information
The mining company located its headquarters at Røros due to the abundant wood (fuel)
and the rapids along the river Hyttelva, which provided hydroelectric power. The use of
fire in breaking up the rock in the mines was a perilous business and cost Røros dearly.
Røros first burnt to the ground during the Gyldenløve conflict with the Swedes between
1678 and 1679, and the smelter was damaged by fire again in 1953. In 1977, after 333
years of operation, the company went bankrupt.
