This peaceful, open-air folk museum, at the eastern end of town, traces rural Norwegian
architecture from the 11th century to the early 1900s.
Activities
You can rug up against the winter cold and take a horse-drawn sleigh ride through a for-
ested, magical winter wonderland or strike out across the bleak Hardangervidda Plateau on
the back of a sleigh pulled by a team of husky dogs . The tourist office can put you in
touch with local tour operators running either of these winter-only activities.

If the idea of hauling yourself up a giant vertical icicle that looks as if it's going to crack
and send you tumbling to an early grave sounds like fun, then Rjukan is the place for you.
It is fast becoming known as the place for ice-climbing. There are more than 150 routes in
the immediate area of the town.
The tourist office can suggest guides and Climb Inn ( www.climb-inn.com ) puts together
climbing packages including guides, equipment rental, accommodation and food.
