The Mozambique Expedition team.
Mr A.L. Reid seated far left and Mr E. Barton standing second
from left. This handsome group reassuringly show no indication
they were of the 'wild bush-ranger type of pioneer'.
the coast, one has to dress very carefully and be exceedingly
polite, raising one's hat even to the Portuguese gentlemen.
While in the town they took the opportunity to visit Reid,
who was still in hospital, now extremely ill with the pain in his
arm which had turned septic, and who was unlikely to return to
the party for some time. Barton was in a quandary as to whether
to proceed without him now that enough 'boys' had finally
been collected, or to wait until he was better. At last he decided
to head south on a short trip taking only Holmes with him,
rather than join the others at the base camp, as the cost of
keeping the 'boys' in camp doing nothing was becoming too
high. They started at noon on Friday 19th May, and Holmes
wrote excitedly in his diary: 'On Safari at last! With 40 boys
and 2 donkeys.'
