hospital. On Monday 11th September 1922, Norman's condition
deteriorated further and the doctors warned that there was little
left they could do. A slight recovery occurred following a hyper-
tonic injection at four in the afternoon, but at six the doctors
said goodbye, leaving them all in privacy. Norman passed peace-
fully away at 8.45 p.m., his distraught parents at his bedside.
The funeral was scheduled for five the following afternoon
but Maggie was too sick to attend, having succumbed herself to
an attack of dysentery. Friends and neighbours rallied round,
some staying with Maggie, some going with Arthur to the
funeral. It was a sad, sad day. Six weeks later Arthur and Maggie
sailed for England leaving Norman behind in Burma; a wooden
cross and a bunch of flowers on his grave.
