Urho K Kekkonen becomes prime minister for the first time. In 1956 he is elected to the position
of president, which he holds for 25 years.
1952
Helsinki hosts the summer Olympic Games. Finland completes war reparation payments of
US$300 million to the USSR as decreed by the Peace of Paris in 1947.
1971
For the first time, urban dwellers outnumber rural dwellers in Finland.
1973
The Delegation for Sámi affairs, the beginnings of the Sámi parliament, convenes for the first
time. Finland signs a trade agreement with the EEC despite Soviet pressure not to.
1995
After a referendum with a 57% 'yes' vote in October 1994, Finland joins the EU.
2000
Finland elects Tarja Halonen as its first female president. She proves a popular figure and holds
the post for the maximum 12 years.
2002
Along with several other European countries, Finland adopts the euro, bidding farewell to the
markka after 142 years.
2007-08
Two similar shooting sprees prompt nationwide mourning and a bout of self-examination in this
usually peaceful nation.
