TREKKING AROUND SEVETTIJÄRVI
There's excellent trekking in this remote lake-spangled wilderness. Though trails are eas-
ily followed, this is a remote area, so you'll need a compass and the 1:50,000 trekking
maps for the area, available at tourist offices throughout the region. See www.outdoors.fi
for more details of these routes.
The Sevettijärvi to Pulmankijärvi trek (60 to 70km) is the most popular. The better of
two trailheads is just north of Sevettijärvi, at Saunaranta. There are several mountain
huts along the route; after the last one, you emerge onto a road at Arola by Pulmankijärvi,
along which you can walk 20km to Nuorgam, or call 0400-377-665 for a taxi.
Other marked routes from Sevettijärvi include the Saamenpolku (Sámi trail), a circular
trail of 87km that loops around to Näätämö and the Norwegian border and back. Expect
plenty of river crossings. The Inarinpolku is a 100km trek to the fjords of the Arctic
Ocean in Norway.
There's a shop in Sevettijärvi, but if you have transport you might want to stock up on
supplies at the supermarket by the Norwegian border at Näätämö, which is much larger
and open daily.
