In-Depth Information
or Karigasniemi and you'll find several picturesque spots with cabins catering to families
or groups of friends going fishing.
The tourist office ( parks info 020-564-7792, town info 040-181-0263; www.utsjoki.fi ;
10am-6pm mid-Jun-mid-Sep) is in a hut on the left just before the bridge. It also serves as a
Metsähallitus point; staff can give fishing information, as well as advice and maps for the
Kevo trail and the various less-used trails that fan out from Utsjoki - the best is a 35km
circular route with a wilderness hut at Koahpelásjärvi to overnight in. There's also a small
exhibition that'll let you sort out a Silver Doctor from a Rusty Rat.
Kylätalo Giisá ( 040-822-8889; 8am-4pm Mon-Fri Sep-mid-Jun, 8am-6pm Mon-Fri,
10am-3pm Sat mid-Jun-Aug) , the village hall, has an excellent handicraft shop, a cafe and in-
ternet access (per hour). It also sorts out bus tickets and fishing licences.
Opposite it is Camping Lapinkylä ( 040-559-1542; www.arctictravel.fi ; tent sites per 2
people €13, cabins €55-80; Jun-mid-Sep; ) , which has a sauna, neat wooden cabins
and plenty of grass underfoot to pitch your tent. It also does fishing trips and rents boats,
and has heated apartments (two/four persons €110/130), which are available in winter.
Nuorgam & Teno Valley
The 44km road from Utsjoki northeast to Nuorgam (Sámi: Njuorggan), the northernmost
village of Finland (N 70°04'), is one of Lapland's most spectacular. It follows the Teno-
joki, one of Europe's best salmon-fishing rivers, and a spectacular sight as its broad wa-
ters cut through the undulating dune-like landscape and across sandy spits and rocky
banks. Most anglers gather near Boratbokcankoski and Alaköngäs Rapids (7km southwest
of Nuorgam), but there are good spots right along this stretch, and the other way from Uts-
joki, towards Karigasniemi, which is another beautiful drive following the Tenojoki and
the Norwegian border.
Apart from fishing, there's not a great deal to do in Nuorgam, but it's a relaxing spot.
Norwegians flock to the (comparatively) cheap supermarkets, Alko store and petrol sta-
tions in town, but the heart of village life is Nuorgamin Lomakeskus ( 0400-294-669;
www.nuorgaminlomakeskus.fi ;powered sites €20 plus per adult/child €5/3, cabins €60-95, apt
€90-170; cafe & reception Mar-mid-May, mid-Jun-mid-Aug, Sep-mid-Oct; ) , which of-
fers camping, cabins and cottage apartments with the works. It sells fishing permits, has a
summer cafe-restaurant, and sells the Nuorgam: Top of EU T-shirt. Book ahead for cabins,
as fisherfolk fill them fast. You can stay here when reception isn't open by calling ahead.
