On the highway about 24km north of Inari, this is a great campground and hostel. Cabins
are small, cosy and look over the river (pack repellent in summer). They have a simple
stove but no fridge. Adjacent campsites are grassy, there are good two- and four-person
rooms in the main building, and a separate set of full-facility cottages. The friendly owners
can sort out transport to trailheads.
Karigasniemi
The border village of Karigasniemi (Sámi: Gáregasnjárga) thrives on Norwegian trade,
and has seven-day supermarkets, bars and restaurants, petrol stations, as well as plenty of
accommodation catering to fishermen beating the Tenojoki. Locals speak Fell Sámi, the
main Sámi language of northern Norway.
A few accommodation choices are in the centre of town, by the border crossing, while
others are strung out along the Tenojoki north and south of town. The 100km drive north-
east to Utsjoki is stunningly beautiful.
Kalastajan Majatalo ( 040-484-8171; www.hansabar.fi ; d €70, apt €85-110, cabins €50) is in
the village centre, and offers comfortable rooms and apartments, and simple cabins. The
restaurant (mains €15 to €24) serves tasty salmon and is popular with Norwegians fleeing
high beer prices.
Tenon Eräkievari ( www.tenonerakievari.fi ; Rovisuvannontie 59) , in a great spot 8km up the
Utsjoki road, is under ambitious new ownership and plans to offer accommodation, riding
trips to a Sámi holy mountain, canoeing on the Teno, and reindeer- and husky-sledding
with an interactive, get-involved attitude.
There's a daily bus from Ivalo to Karigasniemi via Inari. Another bus runs from
Rovaniemi to Karasjok in Norway via here. In summer it continues to Nordkapp.
Kevo Strict Nature Reserve
The 712-sq-km Kevo Strict Nature Reserve, northwest of Inari, has within its boundaries
some of the most breathtaking scenery in Finland along the splendid 40km gorge of the
Kevojoki.
