Lampivaara MINE
( 016-465-3530; www.amethystmine.fi ; adult/child €14.50/8, in winter €25/10; 11am-5pm
Jun-mid-Aug, 11am-4pm mid-Aug-Sep, 11am-3pm Tue-Sat Oct, 11am-2pm Mon-Sat Dec-mid-Apr)
Five kilometres above Luosto, this amethyst mine focuses on small-scale production for
jewellery, using low-impact mining methods. There are guided tours (English available) on
the hour, and you get to have a dig around for your own piece of amethyst. The mine is a
30-minute walk from Ukko-Luosto parking; you're meant to get a cab there if you don't
fancy the stroll. In winter go on skis, or use the snow train from Ukko-Luosto parking (in-
cluding admission adult/child €49/20, from Luosto €59/25).
Kopara REINDEER
( 040-840-9199; www.kopara.fi ; Luostontie 1160; 11am-3pm Mon-Fri early Jun-Sep, 11am-4pm
Jan-Apr)
More or less midway between Pyhä and Luosto, this is a good place to meet some
reindeer. You can go on a short walk (€5 per person) that has information boards on the
creatures, and tempt them closer with a feed bucket. In winter various sledge trips are on
offer (from €30). The friendly cafe has good handicrafts for sale and specialises in blue-
berry pie in summer and, er, reindeer soup in winter.
